Jack is making a lot of friends in Barlick. I don't know why, maybe it's his face markings but people on the street feel the need to stroke him. Women in particular fall for him.

As you know, I had a bad experience with Joe, the lurcher from Irlam. I was very wary about taking another feral dog on but I'm beginning to think that Jack will make it as a member of the team. He's good at coming to hand when off the lead but I'm not saying he'd take any notice if he was distracted.

He's fast and very agile and seems to have lungs as big as a bucket, I haven't heard him pant as though he's out of breath even after a hard run. As for jumping, he's like a cat. Here he is on his favourite perch. Someone asked me the other day why I don't stop him doing it. It's easier to clean the drainer twice a day!

[This topic started as Jack's blog but in Jan 2008 I had to put him down because he started attacking strange dogs.  His successor is Black Jack. a Patterdale pup, no point erasing Jack the Lurcher from history....  he was a good dog and what happened wasn't his fault.  He had too bad a start.....]

Jack doesn't chew it, he just squeezes it to make it squeak. He even plays tunes on it.......

Katie, we have a starling on our street that does a brilliant imitation of the squeak a car alarm makes when you switch it on.

Even our budgie wolf whistles, Snowball will whistle at me when I am cross and I tell him to shut up.

I haven't noticed any particular tunes but he knows he can get a reaction from me with it. He comes and stands in front of me when I am reading and squeaks for attention. I think he's turned on to sounds, he noticed the clock ticking this morning in the bathroom and got up on the bedding box for a closer look. He just sat there watching the seconds hand and listening to the tick. Before you ask, the bathroom is also the darkroom and a clock with a seconds tick is very handy when printing. He's sat on the drainung board watching me....... Hours of fun and entertainmant for all the family.

If anyone has any interest, I've found a marvellous bbook called 'The House Lurcher' by Jackie Drakeford. It's the best book I have ever found on the practical keeping of house dogs of any sort and I'd recommend it to anyonew. Unusually for this sort of book, it's a good read as well! I've kept dogs all my life bbut she is teaching me things I never knew. Besides, anyone who writes describing a recue dog 'he was a poisonous little sod when he came to me' gets my vote.

Alert, well adjusted and totally in control. I get the feeling this dog is doing better at training me than I am with him.

I thought I should report that Jack managed to find a piece of glass on Letcliffe today whilst going at full chat.  Not a big cut but very deep, just above his pad on the left hind leg.  luckily it missed the blood vessels.  I washed him down, waited until it had stteld down and then took him to the vets for 3 staples at £11 each......  I am nursing him and he is comfortable.  He will be at the pub tomorrowso you can give him all the attention you want.  We should be cared for so well......

Hope you get better soon Jack. You didnt seem to be walking too bad yesterday when I saw you, is it just a ploy to get the sympathy vote from the ladies?

He's managing his club foot very well and isn't afraid of putting weight on it so he's in no pain and I suspect it's healing well.  He has a hard plastic boot made out of a saline drip bag to keep the water out and he's got used to the noise it makes.  He will be on parade tonight at the Dog........

I left his plastic boot off and took him up to Letcliffe this morning.  He went off the lead for the first time dince Friday and had a good time.  He was favouring his bad leg a bit so we didn't do much.  I took his boot off when we got home and it's healed up well I think, no weeping and the swelling has gone down a lot.  Looks clean as a whistle to me.  Jack gave it a good licking and now he's laid there quite happily.  I think we might have got away with it and I'm glad I took him to the vet.
