I've always been fascinated by the things people do in their spare time when they can do exactly what they want to do. Men and sheds are a particularly fertile field. Women tend to do their thing in the comfort of the house.

I was delighted to see Andy's picture of the clock movement he has made.

It struck me that we could perhaps start a new topic devoted to spare time skill. So Andy starts it off and my contribution is this:

It's a small steam engine made from scratch and is based on the Stuart 5A but a longer stroke. One of these will drive a 14 foot boat with steam at 250psi. By the way, we don't like to call them models, it's exactly the same construction and materials as a full size engine, just smaller. So come on out there, let's hear about what you make in your spare time. I reckon we could be in for some surprises!

Is that all you lot can say? You are not struck by how different they are? Or what a sod of a job they were to paint?

Actually, I can't stand there to preach Catty....wall is in the way. I don't exactly like the fire alarm being there either, but it was apparently the right spot as we used to have a combustion heater downstairs.....smoke would have to come up the stairwell in a fire.

Stanley.....did those pics come through that size, or did you have to adjust them? It is the first time I had pushed the button marked 'best for web' and I had visions of them still being as big as a tablecloth but of low resolution. Do I need to go back to my normal shrink process instead?

They were fine Maz, I didn't do a thing to them, just pasted them into the site and then the topic.

Maz I wouldn't like to paint them....in fact, I don't think I would. It'd be GAMI!

Oh they are certainly different. I can imagine needing a hell of a big shed to put it all in to paint! Or to construct, come to that.

Every silver lining has a cloud.

Mel....GAMI????? (Gawd....is that another joke gone whizzing over my head? I am really starting to doubt myself you know!) By the way, think it is a fab idea that you take a photo of the room for matching when havin something framed. Such a basic thing....but so clever!

Catgate....constructed and painted on site BUT the interesting thing is....that when we re-did the floor in the kitchen I came across a builder's sketch (floorplan) drawn in detail on the cement .....and it was never meant to look this way! (I always felt the stairs could have been put in a more suitable way! Isn't that strange? Kitchen was also planned as a different layout according to the drawings also.) Some-one got it wrong, or changed tac half way through. As far as the kitchen goes, I am glad it didn't end up as planned.....but the stairs could have been better placed I think. (it was a bit spooky to see these drawings....having had the feeling there was something odd about the stairs!)

We are about to convert the garage into an office. I'll get some before pics and then post them with after pics.

Having said this, we have been talking about it for 2 years. Imindoors was all fired up yesterday and sat planning it out. We should be visiting my brother at the builders merchants today to order materials. We shall see when imindoors gets his backside out of bed!

Maz, the room behind the loft ladder is the current toyroom (office). An absolute dump. If he sorts out the garage then the toyroom becomes a spare bedroom again. Now that would be nice.

So what do you keep up the stairs then Mel. Is it storage or another (bed) room? I can't imagine trying to get Mother-in-law up there after a few drinks. Could be disastrous if the same needed a wee during the night!

"What is that huge thing on the floor  in the passage?"     "Just your mother!"

It's just the loft space Maz. Nothing but junk up there. I keep saying I'll go up and have a sort out but the thought fills me with dread. We are both hoarders....you wouldn't believe how bad it is up there.

Perhaps I could Mel.....

I have gone quite the other way in recent years.....I love a good clean out......and I have to hold myself back from doing it every few weeks! I got to the stage where I couldn't  stand the thought of others having to go through the junk if anything happened to me. Now, I just won't bring it in the front door. (IT STOPS AT THE DOOR...is my new motto!)

I'm telling myself that I'm hanging on for the garage conversion and then when the toyroom is emptied, we'll do the loft at the same time. I'll set a rainy day aside for the mission!

You think it'll take longer!!!! Perhaps I'll ignore it, it might just rot and disappear on its own.
