Tesco are considering opening a store in Barnoldswick.
They claim it will create 175 jobs and keep shoppers in the town, as well as saving local firm L&P Springs.
There are 2 exhibitions taking place this Friday and Saturday for people to gain more information.
Views, anyone?

I don't think they are interested in the town and it's people past trying to keep the claimed £26 million bleed out of town into it's own tills.
It was interesting to note that in the TV report this was put forward by their spokesperson as a bonus for the town as if they were going to redistribute the take to the general population!
I think most folk in Barlick will be able to work out where any profits are going to go.

It would be more interesting to discover where that £26 million is spent, because if it includes Council Tax, energy bills etc, then Tesco aren't probably going to get at that money (yet).
Plus: if it were that simple people wouldn't currently be driving by the Sainsbury's in Colne to go to Morrisons or Asda

Tesco claim that they expect to get approx 70% of that £26m which is about £18 - £19m. Bearing in mind that the loss is spent in
Morrisons Skipton
Tesco Skipton
Sainsbury Colne
Aldi Colne
Asda Colne
Morrisons Nelson
Tesco Burnley
then it is highly unlikely they will get 70% of it.
At the end of the first year when they have achieved a fraction of the sales they expected who do you think they will target ?
Barnoldswick Town Centre and it's Independent Retailers !!!!

More likely to be the Co-op who is targeted. I am reminded of the miracle of the 150 jobs brought to Silentnight at the expense of Batley. All Tesco can do is go for market share, this is the only strategy they have. Any impact on retailers will be simply a consequence of this general strategy not targeted competition. Like Silentnight they can't increase the activity in the market only the location.

To suggest that Tesco would just target the Coop is simply not credible. Tesco said at their consultation days in July that they were targeting the 80% of grocery shopping already out of town and NOT the businesses in the town centre.
It is clear that a vast majority of businesses in the Town Centre stock some products that Tesco will stock in the new store.
Do people really believe that Tesco will ask their customers where they normally buy from, and then turn them away if they say the Town Centre !
Wake up and smell the coffee !

Interesting "swerve" by the Town Council last night.
Consultation seems to be the order of the day
Other stores have shown interest, and one may be Asda.
To some extent I agree with Tomket on the cannabalism of sales, especially since the evidence is already available in the reports from the council in the Retail survey.
That said, people who currently shop out of town, may not switch brand allegiance for anything other than the "top-up" shop.
Thus there is no guarantee that Tesco will 'take' this money
They will, however, have very deep pockets for promotions and price points which may initially "benefit" the town at the expense of the rest of the traders. The competition field is not level, but that alone is not a reason to refuse a superstore entry.
If the town is left with a 'white elephant' closed unit like Nelson, having converted it from "restricted manufacturing" where are the benefits to the town? Plus it leads to a huge coach and horses being hurtled through the planning regulations and effectively there would be very little legal reason to deny other future developments which townsfolk objected to.

I forgot to mention, that some developer has approached the scouts to sell their 'hut' so that there is another entry into the Carlson site if it was redeveloped.

Could be that at the end of the day we end up with a situation similar to what happened in Earby. A brand new building that is built as a supermarket, no customer, lies dormant for over 10 years and then is buldozed to the ground and replaced by housing. All on a former industrial site.

Chap from Accrington just been on BBC R5 phone in - he says that a recent new town centre Tesco has (contrary to his expectations) revitalised the town centre. The market has been updated, and more shops have emerged. He does say though that parking is totally free, which I think is the key to the declining High St problem.

I think the chap from Accrington may well have done the same thing as Matthew Magee from Tesco on Radio Lancashire last week and quoted about a Town Centre Tesco in Penistone South Yorkshire instead of comparing like for like. The proposal for Barnoldswick is for an OUT OF TOWN development and there is no evidence from Tesco or anyone else giving examples of town centres that have flourished when an OUT OF TOWN store opens !
Mis information from the large retailers as usual.
Does the chap from Accrington not remember the store in his town opening ? Tesco had initially promised over 400 jobs and delivered less than 200 !

Most Parking in Barnoldswick is Free ! ( time limited in places ). Tesco's proposed location is not in the Town Centre. Barnoldswick Town centre is also within walking distance of most of the resident population as well.
Accrington has a population of 70,000 is on a main road between Burnley and Blackburn and has a through passenger railway station, all of which give a good mix of potential shoppers and service users. It also has a long history of substantial varied retail.
Barnoldswick remains out of the main flows of people into it or passing through and sized as either an overgrown village or undersized town and the provision of a large superstore would be more likely to either reduce the profitable demand for existing retail outlets or be unsustainable in itself ( unless one banned anyone with a Barnoldswick postcode from shopping in the large retail outlets mentioned in posts above )

Yes it is officially classed as an OUT OF TOWN site because it is more than 300 metres from the officially designated Town Centre as recognised by Pendle Town Council.
