Once I get started with the initial drawing, I can't wait to get on and paint, hopefully each one is an improvement on the last.
After studying your grasses method, I gave it a whirl, and am really pleased with the effect, thanks for that tip Sue..

My collection of early works is increasing in value every day....... The pics are good on the page but so much better in the flesh. Am thinking of framing them myself, it will be cheaper......

Good idea Stanley, pre cut card mounts off ebay are very reasonable, as are the frames...

So how shall we sort out the photo then?
Measure with a micrometer. Mark with a pencil. Cut with an axe. |

Which method did you use Rob. Now go through your building method for me. Do you draw from photos or the real thing. Take me through step by step
Julie, I suggest we put a few photos on this forum and we can decide between them

Hi Sue, I used the small rigger to loosely flick in the grasses, using a pretty dark mixture of blue, burnt umber and paynes grey.
So far I have been painting from photos, still a bit lacking in confidence to go out with a sketch book amidst the glare of the publics eye!!
The buildings are very simple, if you can get the perspective right, sketch the building first then put on a wash, depending whether it is stone or brick, then start to build up the depth of colour to represent the stone/brick. I think if you can keep it "loose" it seems to work better.

Any thoughts on this one for a subject, fairly simple composition, but has lots of elements...

I think this is a good idea. It has many elements of landscape, water, hills, trees a boat and buildings in it.
Thanks for the tips, I will give it a go. Like you I don't like going public as they say, it is a bit off putting to be watched by strangers.
Now for my news. I have a picture in the PEOLPES ART exhibition at Rochdale Art Gallery. I have sold it much to my amazement. I put it on this site a long time ago. I'll sort through and put it here.

I am loving these paintings, 'Well Done' to all of you. Blokman, I thought 'Setting Off' or 'Arriving Home' would be nice names for your beautiful painting.

I think this last one is your best Rob. I love the reflections. I have set myself a task of mastering buildings this week. Watch this space ( I hope) Sue
