I've always been fascinated by the things people do in their spare time when they can do exactly what they want to do. Men and sheds are a particularly fertile field. Women tend to do their thing in the comfort of the house.

I was delighted to see Andy's picture of the clock movement he has made.

It struck me that we could perhaps start a new topic devoted to spare time skill. So Andy starts it off and my contribution is this:

It's a small steam engine made from scratch and is based on the Stuart 5A but a longer stroke. One of these will drive a 14 foot boat with steam at 250psi. By the way, we don't like to call them models, it's exactly the same construction and materials as a full size engine, just smaller. So come on out there, let's hear about what you make in your spare time. I reckon we could be in for some surprises!

Stanley, You will like me until you receive my request for a big bonus.lolol For your information, Australia is requesting the treatment of all wood used for packing since at least 50 years. But it took a very long time before other countries became aware of a growing problem. Since the beasts do not ask for political asylum, nobody did realise what kind and in what numbers they did invade other parts of the world.

There are many forwarders/packers that are still ignorant about the new rules applying now to many countries until whole shipments have been turned back. There were such instances concerning shipments to the USA.

I can believe it, what is perfectly clear is that I have avoided a trap.  Just goes to show, you've got to take an interest in everything and cultivate your friends.  As for the bonus, any time you like.  Youve earned it.

Stanley

Must admit I've learned from this thread. I shall be back in the Freight sheds next Tuesday, I will see what they know about the situation.

That will be interesting.  Very little on the web about it, almost like a trade secret.....

I got the word yesterday that the crate will be delivered at my mates a week on Thursday.  The price has gone up to £99 with carriage but this is largely because I asked for it to have a heavier base to make sure the engines could be firmly bolted down and struts included for the cylinder tops.  Perfect solution and a damn sight cheaper than 3Xcarriage!  More when it arrives......

I am goint to get the lineshaft out of the shed for the 1952 lathe and start the job of getting it fitted up properly.  No point having one of the rarest OT lathes in the world and not having it operational.  I have an independent o/head drive for it as well.  That'll interest you when I get it fitted!

Stanley,
The price seems still o.k. A box of that design and size would be in Switzerland around 300 Swiss francs i.e.  £120.- ,but do not assume that prices in the UK would be automatically much lower.

It doesn't bother me Walter.  It's the right thing for the job and specially made.  Anything that has to be certificated always bears a premium and I don't see how it could be made any cheaper.  A small thing when set against the theoretical value of £12,000 worth of engines.......  I shall take the same view when I go out to the shippers.

The shed has been neglected for a week as I lick my wounds over Jack and get motivated again.  The packing case and shipping the engines to Oz is still on my mind but I shan't have the certifird case for a week.  I spent a lot of time thinking about the next job and have decided that a job which has been on the back burner for about 14 years has to be done.  The fitting up and refurb of John Pickles 1952 lathe.  The motor for it, an original Horace Green 1hp single phase, has been away for repair for 10 months!  First job is to chase Delta Electrical up.  Second job is to erect the lineshaft and overhead drive for it.  The original lineshaft has been sitting in the wooden shed in the yard and I got it out yesterday, the first dry day for almost five days.

Here it is laid on the floor with the ancillary shafts for the overhead.  There are a couple of brackets as well but I know where they are.  So.....  cut the old case up for firewood, get it out oif the way and clean up the old shaft first.

John brought the packing case over today, what a good mate.....  Looks big doesn't it.  Never mind, it's got the right pictures on it.  Now for some signwriting, packing and quotation searching.  We're getting there.  By the way, Jack isn't an optional security extra, just a nosey beggar.

Stanley,
Congratulation. You got a good, solid box. Not that cheap wood chip rubbish that is used nowadays. It is always the same, a bit extra money and you can get good old quality.
Now marking: Do not just staple any papers behind plastic on to the box. If possible make some template with the letters cut out and use a brush with black paint. No marking pens! I even would put a number with 4 or 5 digits, size about 2inch on the top and at least on two sides. That number should be shown also on the shipping papers.
The engine I would wrap in plastic included with some bags containing silicagel ( water/condensation absorbing material).
Boxes of that size can get lost, lying around somewhere and nobody is able to identify the thing  without proper markings.
A word of warning: do not let Jack into the box before you close the lid.

Walter

Good thinking Walter.  I'll give it a consignment number.  I was going to write the address on by paintbrush and black paint on two sides and an umbrella for this way up.  It's got substantial battens on the bottom to keep it off the floor and allow a stacker truck to be used if needed.  I shall attack it tomorrow, today has been look after the pup day.......

Looks good to me Stanley, still can't find anybody locally who admits to knowing anything about restrictions on wooden crates. Certainly no interest on anything imported here.

A notice over the staff entrance of a certain well-known shipping company that always amuses me:  "All our packages are honoured guests!"
