Our 6-year-old granddaughter Poppy took us to Thornton Hall Farm Country Park on Saturday - what a brilliant day out!

A lot of thought has gone into its layout and facilities. Apart from a modern, clean teashop with home made scones and fancies and other delicious stuff, you can explore a maze in the main barn which is made from straw bales and which kept me occupied for a long while (Poppy loved it too).

Also in the barn were various rabbits, canaries, 2-week-old piglets and the most cuddly baby llama you could imagine.

Nearby you'll find shire horses, massive bulls, sheep dogs, rare breeds of hen and two ostriches. We decided to pay a bit extra for a tour of the whole estate aboard The Wizzick (a kind of pope-mobile/ATV) and learned about their longhorn cattle and another rare breed whose name I forget right now, which can be traced back to Roman times.

The owners are involved in an extensive planting scheme and have many areas now growing native trees and shrubs, providing a wildlife haven. The views from the top field were stunning - from Pendle round through to Malham Cove, Settle and Ingleborough - a 360 degrees panorama.

As well as all this, there's a flat campsite area with electric hook-ups, and they also have a conference room which can be hired out. There was a children's birthday party set up for the afternoon - lucky kids!

Although it's fantastic for kids, if you don't have any to hand then it's still worth going. (Mind you, the fact that I had a 6-year-old guardian made it acceptable for me to act my shoe size, not my age...)

Costs vary, but basically it's £4 per adult and £3.50 per child (under 2 free), but you can get a family ticket which saves money if you have several children in tow.

You'll spend a fascinating couple of hours on this exciting, educational but above all FUN visit. The entrance is opposite Thornton church, off Skipton Road. They're open from 10.30am till 5pm - but check before you go as times may vary according to the season.

Their phone number is 01282 841148 and there's more info at Thornton Hall Farm Country Park (PendleLife.co.uk)

Come on H, do you really need a 6 year old with you to "act your shoe size"?

This place is was the home of Ernie Dawson and his family, earlier on this year dad posted an article about going to the funeral of John Dawson the son of Ernie.  I think I am right in saying this farm is run by Sandra (youngest daughter of John) and her husband John Harrison.

Could the John Harrison be by any chance John, son of Billy Harrison?

It IS run by Sandra and her husband John, and a jolly good job they do too.

Speaking earlier of acting my shoe size: I'm actually a size 37.

OK, 4 and a half in old money.Go to Top of Page

BK, where do you get your plods? I'm a mere 13 and I struggle though I got some Reebok Classics for £25.00 at Gibsons in Burnley a couple of weeks ago. Nolic

There was a shop on Millionaire's Row in Barrowford that specialised in larger women's shoes at one time.......

Hi Nolic

There's quite a few places now. It used to be a nightmare getting anything to fit. Brantano, in Keighley, have a selection up to size 15, Winfields at Haslingden and I have a couple of mail order outlets as well, www.walktall.co.uk

I do keep touting Thornton Hall Farm to folks with kids as a great place to go - ever since I heard about the plans and the tourism grant I thought it sounded like a brilliant idea - and have only heard glowing reports from visitors.

I'm waiting for a visit from our Godkids for an excuse to go and behave like a big kid :)

Macy - don't wait!

It's still a great place to go even without kids, it really is. And this time of year it's at its best, with all the young animals around and the countryside in full glory.Go to Top of Page

Sadly it's 'no dogs', which is one of the reasons I haven't been yet. Not so bad when I can leave the hound at home with the menfolk and have a ladies and kids day out :)
