As there are a number of artists among our midst, I thought I would start a topic for watercolour painting.

I have never done buildings other than small cottages, I must give it a try sometime. I only have my tree to do on the other one, it looks better alreadt. I think it can wait until this afternoon after our weekly trip to Burnley to see Dad.
He wants me to show him how to attach a WORD letter to an email for his cousin in Australia. Dad is 91 this week and she is 86. Mind you I don't think Hilda uses email, I think her daughters do that. Unfortunately some of the computing skills Dad learnt when he wa about 84 are slipping from his memory, so every time we tackle a 'lesson' like this it takes some time. Thank goodness I used to teach basic IT keyskills to Foundation and level 2 students when I taught Biology and Health and Social Care at Bury College
Dad is very determined ( or stubborn ) and likes to do things for himself but gets very angry and frustrated when he can't. His GP says this is what keeps him going. Could be an interesting couple of hours!!!!!

I think its much better. Personally I think some darker greens in your front tree would just finish it off completely. Nolic

Thanks for your comments Nolic Yes I tried darkening the leaves , It just seemed too heavy, I tried colored leaves too, I also tried removing some leaves and making it more transparent to the hill behind but eventuallly the paper just wouldn't take any more battering. I personally think that tree is Ok but the foliage is far too dense.

Have been off here for a bit, but it is great to see what you've been doing Sue. In my opinion, and it's intuition as much as owt else, the first picture had a probelm with the tree and the cottage fighting to be the focal point, not least because of the wall running backward and forward between them. Nolics suggestion of taking the background back, worked well but the big success is the tree, which now takes your eye more into the picture...my suggestion, had you not wanted to alter the height of the tree, would have been to put a couple of smaller trees between it and the cottage to lead the eye in, i almost thought I saw suggestions that you had tried this on the marks on the paper. Any way your courage has worked well it's a lovely pic.

Thanks Belle, I appreciate your comments, as I do everyone elses. I am beginning to be adventurous and try things on my own now. I have a picture lined yp for this week. I can't do much else at the moment, being practically immobile

Nice work Sue ,
You really are getting the knack, My computers being odd I really like your tree in the second picture! Your colours are good. Hope you are feeling better and glad you got your books. The still life one is good to start with to practice your drawing skills and tone, adding shadows before you paint. Doing things from life you tend not to get the flat lookand if you have the still life well lit you can get some surprising results. Just play around with the paint and things will happen as you become more confident. Take care! |

It occurred to me recently that we are surrounded by a constant source of ideas for painting. Apart from my own photographs and others, I have been looking through the holiday catalogues recently, not because of the holidays, but because of the pictures,
There are some fabulous photographs. I have been through and cut some out to start a painting source file. I have done the same with my plant catalogues. I have found one particular photo , I think it is Greece, witha typical domed church and the rest of the picture is in different shades of yellow. It is wonderful and is certainly my next challenge
I have scanned it into the computer, enlarged it, as it is only about 10cm by 15cm. I have printed it off in A4 in colour and in black and white. The B&W shows the definitions and contrasts more clearly than the colour. I will use this to do a tracing. I can then use the coloured one to help with the painting. Thats my task for the next couple of days
Similarly the triannual plant catalogues that come through the door have fantastic photgraphs of the most beautifful flowers. So far I have only realy painted land and sea scapes but I would love to get into flower painting ( as well as drawing.... etc etc....)
Knowing me I will end up with a source file that is bulging and I will have tried to paint hardly anything. I have done the same on the computer. I have a folder that I have called Painting Sources. What is good about the computer is that you can enlarge things, and exclude things and play around with the images to see what effects would look best in a painting
As a matter of interest has anyone ever printed off one of their own paintings on to watercolour paper, to make there own prints or converted a photograph into a watercolour effect and tried the same. I have seen the special printer paper for sale and it seems very expensive. However it could make good copies for framing, or making cards. I scan all my pictures where I can and print them as photographs. I have used alot of these in my card making
Many years ago at the graduation ball of Warwickshire daughter her ex boyfriend ( not ex then of course) took a wonderful photo of my two daughters. We took it to BOOTS and had it printed with a watercolour effect for the two sets of grandparents for Christmas. It was certainly a very good effect. I wondered if the DIY versions were just as good
Sue PS I seem to be rambling this morning. Its probably because it is ages since I had a good natter to anyone!!

Sue, there is a photo on the site of some geese done by postman pete. I thought it was painted in gouche but it was a photo done through a photoshop application. Daughter is very good at these sorts of things so I'll get her to do a before and after pic and post it - when she has a bit of time. Nolic

Sue, just to say that if you use other peoples phot's you have to be careful you don't contravene copywright. But I think it is ok for your own use...?

Yes I realise that. If you notice, all the ones I have done in my class I have mentioned that they were taken from an original by Jeremy Ford.
I think it is OK to use them but you have to acknowledge that, they are a copy of..original by.. if they are on public display. You can't claim it is as an original. It is certainly excellent practice. I was quite pleased with my building against the yellow sky yesterday, and what it did was hight light some of my learnt strengths, and the weaknesses that I must work on

Well I have been busy this week trying to paint something cheerful. I am pleased with my efforts although the dome of the church was difficult to make it look smooth and round. I have included the original so you can see what I was trying to do. I changed the islands in the background as i wanted to make them more of a feature. I have included and acknowledged my original source picture

Suze, I coomented in the photo's how nice this was. What colours did you use. I think like me you are reluctant to use shadows and darks. I'm working on my fear of "spoiling" things but I bet if you got some more darks on the dome you could start to get the shape more. Nolic
