I'll decide what I want to meditate on thank you. As for shoot to kill, Sharpville, Kent High, Derry and eventually tragedies like Dunblane. Progress towards a better world doesn't come out of the barrel of a gun.
A new neighbour moved into the street yesterday. My old friend Ann has moved out and will be missed. The new man is a dog walker, has an old Labrador and I already know him by sight. Neighbours make such a difference and it looks as though, once more, we have been lucky. Only a small thing, but at least it's positive.
The last known WW1 combatant is dead. See this LINK.

Bradders I take that coming from you as a compliment. Please explain your method for the control of a Mob !!!!

In days gone by our unarmed police force used to be the envy of the world. They were good at what they did.

Very true Belle, but in those days most people gave them their support.

I got this from another website. I have no means of knowing the truth of the matter. Sounds about right to me though. The officer concerned had a record of assaulting the public, and had been retired once already "on medical grounds" . He was later reinstated. After the incident it was put about that the victim was a very unhealthy vagrant and drunk. (this was probably true). Strangely for these days - there was no CCTV available. None of his nearby colleagues seem to have witnessed the events. No disciplinary action was taken against the officer, and the DPP said no criminal action was appropriate.
Then an American tourist revealed that he had phone footage of the incident. Wisely he handed it not to the Police, but to the Guardian newspaper.
Seperately - I remember the military riot training film. Eartly footage of N. Ireland show it in action. It's a standing joke in our family that you never wear a red shirt in a crowd - just in case matters get out of hand.

Violence has always been confronted with Violence. Hitler springs to mind, look at the Bomber Command thread !!! Violence in self defence is a recognised acceptable behaviour extended to the Police as well as the Citizen !! For the Tomlinson case we just have to leave that to the Courts, and the British system of Justice Belle the way the Mob operate today is so different to what it was even a few years ago !!! It may be the internet that is the cause, with people intent on making trouble, having easy access to other like minded individuals.

Generally speaking, the old bobbies had the advantage of `ruling by consent', a feature that has now become a thing of the past.

True Ted, and they had more autonomy. I remember the bobbies patrolling in twos on Scotland Road in Liverpool and being joined at night by the sergeant with his night stick. A good read on the subject is 'No Mean City' about Glasgow and the way the gangs were dealt with. I used to spend a lot of time with an old bobby in Glasgow and he gave me my copy, he was there and said it was very accurate. One of their favourite ploys was to stand back and let rival gangs fight it out and then mop up afterwards.
Went for annual eye test yesterday. Cataracts have deteriorated slightly obviously and she said that if I wanted she's refer me for surgery but I told her that I'd feel a bit of a cheat taking up resources when I am still functioning perfectly well. Very thorough glaucoma tests and she was perfectly satisfied. The funny thing was that one of my eyes has shifted a bit and I needed one new lens to correct the imbalance. I was astounded when they said it would be £150 just to replace one lens in my old frame, went home, rooted through my old glasses and found a pair that were perfect! so, no serious problems, £150 saved and we march forward! Good result.

Stanley I am puzzled, how can you have a pair of glasses at home which are a match for your eyesight that has changed ? Not disagreeing just asking a question, out of concern.

Haven't used them myself, but I'm told you can make some great savings by using one of the online websites such as Glasses Direct.
Obviously you need a current prescription from an optician.

What caught my attention is that I have been asked to show a class of 6 year old's how to get a noise out of a didgeridoo. Should be fun, still haven't mastered circular breathing (I know the theory and can do it with a pathetic squeak from the didge) so it won't be a very long demonstration. Now, should I wear my Australian cowboy hat and put the boomerang in my back pocket?

The best demonstration of circular breathing I ever saw was my Cousin Ronald, he was a smoker, having taken a drag the smoke would roll out of his nose and back in through his mouth and he could keep it going for ages.
