I don't think I need to Bob. I often wonder whether it's because we are so busy or if it's something to do with the way we think as we get older. Whatever, Friday seems to come round faster and faster. The only way I can get a handle on it is to measure time by progress, what I actually get done and in that respect I think I'm just as productive as ever. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
It was so much fun! Here's a couple of happy buggers for you!

We did good work at Ellenroad. I've always said that when I die they should chuck my ashes in the chimney bottom and put a plaque on the stack to commemorate Peter Tom and the old Fart. That's the only reason it's still there. Jack Brookes told me I was mad when I set them on after Peter Died but he loved the job of finishing it off properly. He said it was the last time anyone would do a proper job on a stack. 15 years later I took great pleasure in ringing them up and telling them I had another for them at Masson Mill. Keith Batley was delighted and they made a good job of it. The least that can be said is that we left our mark. Have a look at Ellenroad next time you pass, a nice stalk!

Vic Shackleton sent me a number of photos and asked if I could put them on this thread for him. There are so many I've made them into four composite pictures of 4 photos each. Click on them to get bigger versions. Vic's mesage was: "Here is a series of fascinating pictures sent me by a friend which may be enjoyed by the lads on S.C. If you could send the pictures on to the lads along with my good wishes I would be pleased." The description that goes with the photos is: "The photos show workers building a footpath thousands of metres up, around the vertical slopes of Shifou mountain in Hunan Province, China, and without any safety measures. They are building a plank road to the side of the mountain that will stretch for 3 kilometres (9843 feet) and will be the longest sightseeing footpath in China. Heady stuff this and perilous too."

One thing is certain! We'd never get away with that scaffolding in the UK under Elfin Safety! Good pics Vic, thanks for getting them on the thread. The puzzle for me is whether the flimsy scaffold had to bear the weight of the shuttering for the finished reinforced concrete walkway.

Stanley, When you took on the Ellenroad project, had there been any damage/vandalism done to the engines/steam generation plant.

I've added in some details from Vic about the photos. See the text above the photos.

I expect there will be a handrail........of sorts. I have to say it reminds me of the Max Miller joke that (I think) got him banned from the BBC .......

Robert, remarkably little because the site had been subject to a security guard on site from the time the mill closed to when demolition started. The only unexplained missing item was a set of new flyshaft steps, very big lumps of bronze of course. They were certainly in the cellar when the mill closed but evaporated! Only other items stolen were the two big drip feed lubricators fro the banjo oilers on the crank pins and the bronze guides for the push rods on the Craig's motion on the HP cylinders. Newton made the guides and he and I made a drip feed lubricator apiece for the banjo oilers. Oh, and the name plates went missing as well. I found where they were but rather than cause embarrassment I borrowed them and got the pattern Maker that Geoff Smith used to make two new patterns and got replica plates cast. In case you're wondering, the originals were with a prominent member of a local preservation society who wouldn't part with them and any attempt to force reinstatement would have caused a lot of damage. Just one of the funny little decisions I had to make on the hoof when I was doing the job.
