Today I had my first oil painting lesson. I have been invited to join a friend at this workshop for three months, but previous sessions clashed with my watercolour workshops. At last an opening came up ( because we have postponed our holiday to France). I was amazed at how easily and quickly very complicated pictures started to appear on the canvas, and also how easy it is to correct or alter as you go along. Flaws are quickly concealed by a flip (or two or three etc ) of a brush.

So here it is, Sue's first  oil paining in the style of Anthony Goldthorpe, and thanks for such a wonderful relaxed class

Very impressive. Is there some of the Bob Ross method used in  this class? Nolic

Now that is a picture! Seems like you might be the likely one to give us a few classes sue, i like it a lot.
Nolic, is the Bob ross method one where you p[aint all the dark areas in black first?

Yes it was all Bob Ross, paints and all. If you get a chance go to the craft exhibition at Reebok Stadium Bolton this weekend, Anthony is demonstrating on both days. I was REALLY impressed. The picture looks even better this morning, though I say it myself

Big brushes on gesso wet canvas is the style. Bob Ross's programmes are on Sky TV most days - usually early morning. Need to have a big bank acount to use his gear, its very, very expensive. Nolic

It certainly is. In Ken Bromleys catalogue, a starting pack is £74.

However the workshop was good value. Everything was provided, canvas, paint, easels, etc. The lot. PLUS free tea and coffee. I took a sandwich for lunch others went to the 'chippy' It was a nice spot overlooking Hollingworth Lake. Workshops are about once a month

Unless you want to do it BIG TIME, the workshops are all you need. Its a long time till Christmas, and even longer till my birthday!! So that is out, to start my collection

This is my fourth oil painting. I must admit that I have caught the bug. It seems so much easier than  watercolours. This picture is of  a stormy sea on a beach at moonlight. How much easier it was to do the moonlight effect than when we all had a go at Christmas

Tony is a really good teacher and he must take the credit. I painted this one for the main sejour wall in our french house. I wanted a stormy scene , everyone else did tranquil

Great painting Sue, you'll be proud to show that.

Ilkley Art Show 17th  August well worth a visit as usually some fine examples of Bob Ross style paintings. Nolic

Had a meal at the Pendle Inn, Barley on Friday night - on the wall by our table was an oil painting (I think the title was Polgers? Moon) - it was dreadful and the price on it was £110.  So Sue - get your paintings up somewhere,  they must be worth more than that!!
