Hello all, I don't post much on here but enjoy looking around the site. As a cyclist I thought you might be interested to read about what goes on inside Hope Technology, which is becoming a significant employer in Barnoldswick and is an extremely respected name in cycling.

A friend of mine doesn't have such a positive view of the company, he lives next to their factory and works nights, he's frequently woken up by noise from the place. He used to whinge when it was Carrs too.......
Need computer work ?

I wonder if the folk that live near to the place he works through the night at have the same view.

What is amazing is that Hope are succeeding in competing with the giants of the bicycle components industry, Shimano, Suntour, SRAM and Campagnolo. It just shows what can be achieved with a humble beginning in an old mill in Colne, sensible investment in equipment, modest lifestyle aspirations by the directors and exactly the right R&D and marketing.

Hope they do better than Norman Fullalove's lads. They followed them into Coates and now Calf Hall.

Was that their predecessors in the factory, Stanley? What did they make? From the article it sounds as if the previous owner was over fond of window-dressing.
I'm sure the move from Colne to Barlick with its Rolls Royce experienced workforce will have benefited them more than they anticipated; the workers would bring ideas and disciplines that the Hope lads couldn't bring.
Their products are extremely good; I have several original Hope bits on my bicycle and the quality has always been outstanding, they are simple, robust and easy to service and parts are widely available. For the parts you can't get from a local bearing stockist, Hope are fantastic for after-sales service and will happily jiffy bag a spare spacer or O ring or seal free of charge. A top company altogether.

The former owners were Carr's printers aka "Norman Fullalove's Lads"
They spent a lot of money on Calf hall mill, it was semi derelict before
they bought it.

Plugs is right. Carr's Printers was a sound firm and invested heavily in the mill and latest technology at both Coates and Calf Hall. Very high quality catalogue printing was a large part of their work. Just before closure they installed a state of the art print-on-demand facility. Nobody is sure why they failed, lots of flash cars on the forecourt and rumours of a hole in the accounts but no evidence. General assumption was 'clogs to clogs in two generations'.
Yorkshire Plush, a velvet firm, had Coates Mill before Carr's Printers.

Every year we get 2000 quality A1 size wall-hung calendars with metal strips top & bottom printed for distrubution around our export and UK customers. About eight years ago I was given the job of sourcing the printing because it was thought we might get them done more cheaply overseas. What prices did I get? £4.78 EACH from a British printer against £0.56 each from a printer in Johannesburg. The quality is excellent.
I expect that's what killed that business.
