Today I had my first oil painting lesson. I have been invited to join a friend at this workshop for three months, but previous sessions clashed with my watercolour workshops. At last an opening came up ( because we have postponed our holiday to France). I was amazed at how easily and quickly very complicated pictures started to appear on the canvas, and also how easy it is to correct or alter as you go along. Flaws are quickly concealed by a flip (or two or three etc ) of a brush.
So here it is, Sue's first oil paining in the style of Anthony Goldthorpe, and thanks for such a wonderful relaxed class

I bought the Master Kit from America on ebay. I knew it was only about 19 dollars over there so knew the bidding wouldn't go much higher. I got it for slightly less plus posatg. Our local Range shop sells a lot of Art stuff plus Bob Ross and I have bought the cleaning kit from there. My olis teacher is a Bob Ross trained teacher and demonstrater so I can order things through him but not necessarily discount. I already have a good size table easel that i got as a freebie on some thing I once joined. I also find surfing the net can be very beneficial

Hobbeycraft (there's one in Bolton) frequently sell canvassess off quite cheaply. A few coats of acrylic gesso on hardwood also gives a good base I believe. Nolic

Yes I bought some of those canvasses Nolic. There is one in Coventry near number 1 daughter's home, and yes I have heard that about a hardwood base, although surely it won't have the same spring for some of the techniques

If I was looking for wood to paint on I'd be seeking out old cheap furniture. The wood is perfectly matured and stable.

Suze, I had a look inh the new Argos catalogue this morning and they are selling canvasses at quite reasonable prices. Might be worth a look. Nolic

Sometimes a shop called Home Bargains has really cheap canvas's. Do you have one in Rochdale? The Works has decent canas's too. I haven't painted for years , I must have a go again , I wasn't that good but I enjoyed it and found it relaxing , there isn't enough hours in the day for all the things I want to do.

I am an advocate for a 14 day week now I have retired. there just isn't a moment to spare. There is a Home bargains in Bury, but I must admit I have never looked for Canvasses there. I used to go in quite a lot when I worked at Bury College. It was great for cheap mugs, tea coffee, biscuits etc as well as general toiletries.

Got three oiled beech wood easels from the Home Bargains in Accrington, two small ones, ideal for displaying canvases and a bigger one, the large one was about £7 and it is my main tabletop easel.....
