Well folks, we are now running the database on Microsoft SQL server, which was one of the main reasons why we upgraded to our new hosting package. Microsoft SQL Server is a more robust and well suited relational database product than the old Microsoft Access. It will stand us in good stead for the future growth of OGFB.
The poor old Microsoft Access database which as served us well for the past 4 years was creaking at the seams, with a database size of over 200Mb and getting hit with well over 10,000 page views a day was a big ask.
Microsoft SQL server is new territory for me, I am having to learn as I go, it's a lot more complicated than the old MSAccess, but I'm getting there. After 4 attempts tonight or should I say early this morning, I finally managed to transfer the old database across without loosing any of the valuable information. (I Hope)
I am having to test the site in real-time, so if you come across any weird error messages, please cut & paste them into this topic so that I can keep track of them and deal with them as they occur.
Now that the information is finally across into the new database all that needs to be done now is to fine tune the Microsoft SQL server application to maximise its performance, in particularly the building of the indexes for what is called "Full Text Indexing", once this is completed then the site's search facility will be FAST, what typically took say 30 seconds to search for in the old days will now take under a second to accomplish. Not only will the site & forum search facilities speed up but the site's speed in general will increase.
I will keep you all informed of my progress has and when I accomplish these bits and pieces.
Right then, it's time to get back to the chapter on "Full Text Indexing" a light read at this time of day

If anyone noticed that the number of registered members is reduced then I am at fault, I apologise for deleting fifty of those most dedicated ex-Barlicker's that we had living in Afghanistan who graciously thought that out lives would be enlightened if we visited their salubrious websites that they had on offer.
Now about these Russian ex-Barlicker's...

I have just deleted another two Afgan members, even though the things they were selling seemed reasonably priced

I'll do the fix asap.

Gamer is another webmaster running the same software suite and is trying to convert over to Microsoft SQL from Access.
He is using the arcade module which I developed years ago, all I have to do is try to figure out which piece of code I changed 2-3 years ago to get it to run on SQL.
Time to delve into the few thousand lines of code that makes up the arcade module.
Watch this space.

well kinda, but not realy, i have MYSQL and MSSQL and ACCESS sites running. i just want to go ahead and get my main site over to MSSQL, running a backup is not hard to do on a SP built site when it's on Access but one day Access will not handle to load, and here latley i have had to restart my IIS a lot, i am hoping that when i get it all over MSSQL some of that will stop, then running backup on a MSSQL database is not to hard seing i own and run all my servers right here within walking distance, like 20 feet. i have got a lot of the code fixed or corrected for this i still have a long road ahead of me. the test site is a dup of my main site right now. main site is www.poj-iyd.com now on MSSQL and the test site is sjbnet1.poj-iyd.com on MYSQL running Drupal. quote: Stanley wrote: New platform?
