Tesco are considering opening a store in Barnoldswick.

They claim it will create 175 jobs and keep shoppers in the town, as well as saving local firm L&P Springs.

There are 2 exhibitions taking place this Friday and Saturday for people to gain more information.

Views, anyone?

Apologies Thomo for getting your name wrong.

The challenge is not necessarily aimed at you specifically but at those who continually complain about the opening hours of the shops.

Thomo I think made two points. The quality and avalibility of Fruit and Veg. I think a competitor independent shop would have much the same problems , the wholesale markets are difficult to get stuff (at the right price to make a profit ) from these days ( One down towards Bolton I think did win the Radio 4 Food Programme Market of the Year award this year) and even if small profit made I doubt it would cover the present day cost of a retail premises.  The larger supermarket chains have much of the distribution system tied up in such a way that they can sell polybagged washed veg and fruit at lower prices than they sell the loose items ( Try Sainsbury's Tomatoes/Apples/Carrots/Spuds/Bannanas pricing to confirm). And they rely on high volumes of purchases to keep that effective.  Non market-trader independent greengrocers seem to have just about disappeared from all high streets around England

Most of my shopping is out of town ( because its done weekly visiting the mother in law to take her out for the day and is geared to her needs ).

Thomo also says to do the Christmas shop a visit out of town was needed to get all on the list, this could be true of just about anyone whom wants a bit more than basic items - I had some strange demand for stuff from specialist sellers that arent in Barnoldswick this year, and would not be stocked by Tesco or Similar.

Two more points then, first I will gladly pay more for quality, second, at one time a foray of the shops in Barlick would fill most Christmas gift lists.

I see Pete Gardiner has a letter in the Mail berating the Barlick shop owners for not opening longer hours.

I am sure some of the shopkeepers that Pete Gardiner criticises will point to the fact that they have always opened the hours they do.

Being busy with deadlines yesterday, I had a short time available at around midday to nip into town and run a few errands. The first shop I encountered had a "Back in 5 mins" notice on it, which was still there 10 minutes later after I'd done all my other shopping.

Sadly I've had to ask a friend to get the required item in Skipton today.

I really dislike being negative, because I love Barlick shops and I realise it must be very difficult for the shopkeepers to make ends meet, but you can understand why people want somewhere they can rely on.

The other thing was that for the second time in a fortnight, I asked for something but the shopkeeper shook their head and said "There's no call for it."

"But I just did," I replied.

And the shopkeeper just smiled. Go to Top of Page

Which shop was closed for 5 minutes ?

What was the required item ?

What was there 'no call for' ?

I don't want to give any adverse publicity for the shops in question. I enjoy shopping there and they do try very hard, so singling them out would be unfair.

Suffice to say it happened, although I get the impression you don't believe me! I don't make things up just for the hell of it, I can assure you! Wink

I'm sufficiently experienced in forum bunfights to appreciate that you didn't intend to be aggressive, even though the tone of your reply seemed a bit harsh. However, the written word can be misinterpreted when body language and facial expressions are absent so I apologise if I read it incorrectly.

I fully understand that this is an emotive subject - so believe me when I say that I appreciate people getting off their backsides and fighting for something they believe in.

The reason I mentioned the above in the first place was that by understanding the grievances of shoppers, you can better address the situation and allay their fears. If you need to know which shops and goods I was referring to I will gladly tell you privately. (It involved food in one case and a DIY item in another.)Go to Top of Page

Sorry if it appeared aggresive, and of course I believe you but the shops who are letting you down are spoiling it for those shopkeepers who provide a decent service.

Some of my friends have businesses in the town and they feel aggrieved at being included in the general criticisms being made.

I hope that if I do criticise, it is purely with the intention of being constructive.

The shops - ALL the shops - in Barlick do a great job under difficult circumstances. It can't be easy if you're a sole trader and an emergency crops up. What else can you do but lock the door while you sort it out? Employing extra staff would put up your running costs and therefore your prices - so you're stuffed every which way.

Realistically, though, the average shopper doesn't give a monkey's about the ins and outs of running a business and cares even less about the personal circumstances of the shopkeeper. These days they're all used to having access to whatever they want at whatever time they choose ... and prefereably as cheap as possible.

I'm not sitting in judgement, saying this attitude is right or wrong. I'm making an observation about today's society in general. Only when you understand a situation fully can you meet and overcome the challenges.

In case you think I'm being a bit woolly and philosophical here - without any great substance behind my musings - I'll come out with what's been mithering me. Much as I love Barlick and have championed its shops, its character, its countryside etc etc, I think what I want is an answer to one question:

Are the shopkeepers prepared to alter their working practices to meet the challenge of today's shopping habits, or are they going to remain rigidly stuck in their ways, bleating about how unfair it all is? (Whoops - THAT sounded aggressive! Didn't mean it to!!!) Go to Top of Page

Interesting to see that after Pete Gardiner's letter in the mail that the same paper today reports on yet another example of Tesco's inability to understand it's local customers.

Whilst our brave soldiers are fighting overseas for us one of their Wives/girlfriends at Catterick garrison conceived the idea of a charity song.

Tesco decide that the Tesco store in Catterick is too small to stock the single but is the right size to stock the X Factor winner's song !

This on top of Tesco's decision to withdraw its support for Cancer Research in favour of sponsoring a Gay Pride march.

With Barnoldswick's heavy involvement with Bosom Friends etc it is just more examples of Tesco not understanding or caring about their local customers.

I then open the local paper to see a letter form the President of L & P Europe criticising people for having supposed unfounded views about what a Tesco will do to Barnoldswick.

He goes on to almost plead poverty for their business in Barnoldswick. He fails to point out that L& P in Barnoldswick is part of L & P Europe which in turn is part of  L & P Incorporated in the USA.

O, did I forget to mention the following facts from L & P's 2010 Annual Report the following FACTS:-

2010 Company Turnover $ 3,359,000,000 up on previous year by 10%

2010 Gross Profit $ 655,000,000 up on previous year by 4%

2010 Earnings per share up by 64%

L & P are commited to their European businesses.

L & P manufacture Shelving for Retailers !!!!!!

I ask you.

Poor old L & P - Let's have a whip round for them !

This is getting a bit "heavy" I too saw the letter in the paper and the points made were much as I see them. this is a local issue and not a global one. I also had a "Calluna" moment today, I went in search of a decent cigar and having been unimpressed by what was available in the Co-op remembered the little shop on the square!!!! "Sorry, we dont stock cigars anymore, there is no call for them" so it will have to wait until I go to Skipton again, and they have "White Owl" cigars in Craven Court. Tomket, I am sure that like the rest of us, you have a sense of humour, could you please let some of it filter through into your posts, it may dilute the acidity, Have a Happy Christmas and a worry free New Year.
