Here's the first of what we (Big Kev and Callunna) hope will be many images combining old and new photos of Barnoldswick.
This one is a 19th century picture of Wellhouse Farm which stood on present day Church Street.
Having put the two images together, though, it's possible that the farm actually stood where the car park is now, ie behind Church Street on Brook Street. The gable end in the original photo didn't match the present day gable end of the Bodycare shop, whereas it might fit the one at the end of Garden/Market Street - but this might just be down to a variation in the position of the cameras.
Anyway - it was fun blending the two images together. And yes, that is Callunna standing next to the little girl...
Apologies for the small size. The original jpg is 1500pixels/127mm wide, but it seems to shrink when I insert it in a post.
Thanks to SG for supplying original Wellhouse Farm image.

No I think you are highlighting one of the things we all need to take on board a bit more seriously, we do tend to hijack the original topic and whilst that can be just misplaced enthusiasm, it makes for difficult retrieval of information. so you are right to respectfully ask others to open their own photo topics and to keep this topic for the purpose it was created. I think what may cause this to happen so often is that it is not that straightforward to open a topic and is a lot easier to add something onto one someone else has opened...maybe the pc guys can fix this?

Heather/Belle there may be a bit of confusion here, Thomo did ask for permission to post and Big Kev replied "go ahead". By the way I don't disagree with you but as Big Kev said "it is a public forum". There is of course the chance that this becomes a commercial venture then it may not fit in as a forum topic.

The last thing I want to do is fall out with anyone, especially not two lovely blokes like Peter and Gus. They are both obviously very talented and I appreciate all their input which adds considerably to the rich variety of material on OGFB.
I also apppreciate that Peter checked it was OK before posting anything and no, I wouldn't want any posts removed - both Gus's and Peter's images are great.
I suppose what I was moidered about was the same as if someone had started a topic about their drawings of dogs in a particular style and suddenly everyone else started doing exactly the same style in the same post - it kind of steals your thunder a bit.
Herb, if topics with a commercial nature about Barnoldswick were banned then I'd have to remove anything related to our walks book ("Explore The Barnoldswick Countryside", price £4 available from the Council Shop, eBay or drop me an email and I'll post one out... :–) and Stanley would have to remove all references to his books for sale too, come to think of it!

No falling out Cally, but I have removed my pics, these may re-appear later today on a new topic. Good luck with the project, and on the grand scale of commercial things, you are a minor player, this whole site could be viewed as an inteligence gathering exercise for a specific commercial venture.

I have no problem either Cally, the superimposing, of old Barlick photos has been a thing i have been doing for quite some time, and posting to ogfb. I will gladly remove my efforts from this particular forum, and would never for a moment tnink you are "ockard". The Barlick Ghost project is a great idea, and i wait in anticipation for the final results. All the best to you and big Kev, if i can help in any way just ask ......

Thanks lads!
Of course the superimposing technique wasn't my original idea and I enjoy seeing other examples - it's just that the way we're doing it is a bit different, that's all.
I think we've reached a sensible, amicable and all-round beneficial conclusion here?

I think this needs to be said: the way in which this little problem was handled was completely devoid of any, sniggering, sneering, insult mongering, petty mindedness or the kind of outlandish egotism which manifests itself in certain other topics, this demonstrates a rationality sadly lacking elsewhere. God luck.

The One That Got Away
So there I am, thinking about getting some more images done when I happen across an old photo of a Whit Walk on York Street/Beech Street.
Stanley had already done a modern (2005) scene of it but understandably wasn't able to get the correct perspective as the original must have been shot from one of the windows in the terrace.
What if... no, surely not ... blimey - that looks pretty darn near like the view out of MY window!
It would make sense - in 1911 W. Atkinson (of History of Barnoldswick fame) had a son (Carr) who lived at this address. Was he visiting and recording the Whit Walk for posterity?
Grabbed my camera and eagerly took up the most likely position. But no, it's not quite right:
OK, angle a bit wrong, try upstairs, hanging out of the window, camera at arm's length using the screen to compose it rather than the eyepiece:
Still not right! I need more of the frontage of the row just above the silver car on the right.
I think it must have been taken from next door's window to the left. But even if I managed to convince them I'm not a complete looney if I ask whether I can hang out of their living room, I still wouldn't get the shot I want because of the estate agent's sign obscuring a vital part of the background.
I fear this particular Ghost shot will never happen...

Would the different lens arrangement between the old film cameras that the original was taken on and the modern miracle that you are taking the shot on make a difference also? Just a thought, the technology is 100 years apart.

What lens you using, H? If it's a compact, I suspect a focal length of around 35mm (full frame 35mm film camera equivalent). Might be worth trying the same position but with a 28mm lens, that'll be 14mm on the Olympus DSLR.
Cheers

Thanks Ian and BK.
Mmm - my little compact does have a variable focal length but even so, I think I'd still struggle with that angle on the windows. I need to be standing further to the left. Or maybe not? Next time you come round to borrow a cup of sugar, BK, bring your proper camera and I'll hold on to your legs while you hang out of the window...
[Advance notice to emergency services: be on standby to scrape up 2 gormless photographers from pavement on York Street]
But then again, until Taylforth's sell No 15 their sign is too obtrusive so perhaps we should wait.
But hang on a mo - perhaps the clue IS the Taylforth's sign? In the original on the left hand side we see a vertical wall, but in my present day shot we can also see the bit that sticks out - the steps and railings of the 2 end houses.
Was the original taken from the spot where the sign is now?

Heather, we once did a project at Pendle Heritage where I had to go out and duplicate old views with a modern pic. They were never quite right, mostly because I guess we couldn't reproduce the lens characteristics of the old cameras. One turned out to be impossible and I realised that the road level had been raised about 4 feet! We had to abandon that one.

Cally, Borrow a ladder, put it against the front wall and have a go from there, by varying the height of the ladder a wider range of options become available.

Nay lad! I renovate houses - I've got my very own ladder
However, I don't think I'll need one because I reckon I've cracked the problem. Just popped round there and took this preliminary shot on my little camera. Hopefully BK will be able to do a proper one soon. Looking at it again, I just need to catch the end house on Chapel Street which is now obscured - but it's 90% correct so far. Just need to drape over the vicious pointy railings a bit more...
