Following the recent discussion about chippies in Barlick, I was wondering whether there's merit in creating a new Forum for reviews of local eating out places? And pubs? This would benefit newcomers/visitors as well as locals. I would be happy to write reviews of the local restaurants and pubs - a tedious and arduous task but someone's gotta do it The beauty of a website like OGFB is that several people could comment on the same place - one person's meat is another person's poison - so the reader would get a fair and balanced idea, unlike newspaper reviews which depend on the mood of the reviewer on just one occasion.

Malty, twas I. Would you believe if I said it was Cath who had the pint of Black Sheep?

I've just noticed Macy's reference to Connor liking a bit of cod and it brings to mind my old dad and his guide dog.

Dad was living in Bradford for the last few years of his lfe having got a job there that he could do despite his blindness.  He frequently went to the local WM club on a Friday or Saturday night and called at the chippy on his way home.  He used to order a cod and scraps for the dog. The chippy was quite generous and the scraps often had large pieces of fish in them. When dad realised this he stopped ordering his cod and just called in for a small chips ansd scraps or just scraps telling the chippy he'd gone of  fish. Tight old sod was getting home and taking the fish out of the dogs portion, leaving just batter for the dog and saving himself money at the same time. Tight old Tyke.    Nolic. PS - have I put this tale on before if so tell me and I'll take it off.

Are you hvaing a senile moment Oilcan?

I would believe that Cath had the pint. I almost always drink pints myself (unless I'm on the vodka of course!). Our local/regular (2 or 3 miles away but the only pub that me & imindoors uses) always has a different special ale on. I can't resist sampling a pint of the latest barrel.

Connor also likes a can of pilchards in tomato saucefrom time to time.  He's goen off raw meat lately (since he had a bit of colitis) so I haven't been giving him chicken wings.  He's been noshing on home made casseroles instead.

Comrade, I haven't seen that story before and I like it.  When Vera and I were young and hard up we used to get free bones for the dog, boil them for soup for us and than give Fly what was left.  I'm happy to report that Jack is still on his chicken etc. and his turds are like little bullets!  I've just remembered something else about free grub.  When I was at West Marton Dairies we used to tank skim out to pig-feeders.  There was one at Brighouse, Rex Paterson, who used to feed waste from food factories to his pigs.  I often came home with a sack of broken biscuits or mishapen chocolates.  Even now I can't resist a freebie; I always get a big piece of fat to roast with the beef and I use it instead of butter etc. in my bread.  Better actually....

Richard Broughton here - sorry, been away for a while. But at least a topic dear to my heart - food.

I have to say I like Jesters. Had the best steaks I've ever had there, and they (the steaks) knock places like Chez Gerrard folk down here rave about, into a cocked hat. Last time in Jesters was for my brother's 40th in May just gone. I had the halibut - great piece of fish that was. Only quibble I'd have is they over-sauce sometimes. Scallops need nowt more than butter, and the halibut would've been better just grilled. Portions are a bit too big too - enough is as good as a feast.

I like The Bull at Broughton - the beer's are good (Copper Dragon) and the food is top-notch bistro style. Confits, slow-braises and such. Not been to The Tempest since Peter Parfitt had it, but according to the latest Good Pub Guide it's rated one of the best in the country! Like the Fanny Grey too - especially for gammon and eggs which I only ever have in a pub. Gives you a thirst with the salt, ensures you drink more. They aren't daft. Doug gives me 2 eggs, if I ask. Father's quiz master up there on occasions.

Haven't had fish and chips in Barlick for years so can't comment - but as a kid we always went to the Church Street one for our tea on a Friday (not that we're papish-types). Me and my brother used to get them and bring 'em home - once we realised that you actually to get hot food home in a reasonable time to stay warm, having taken a half hour messing about one time. Father went mad. Used to be run by a family called Kindness that chippy.

And Doc: fish and chips in my local chippy here (Christy's) will cost you over a fiver each, minimum! Mind you - they cook in beef dripping and they are the best I've ever had. Anyone ever in this area should go - Haddock, Cod, Skate, Halibut, proper fishcakes made on the premises........(anyone had a fishcake in Sheffield?)

Family says Mario's is good - not been.

Course, if you want to eat some of the best food in the country then go to the Devonshire at Bolton Abbey - that has at least one (poss 2?) Michelin Stars. And The Angel at Hetton has one of the country's best wine lists.

I once took my mate Martha and her husband Roger to the Angel at Hetton, it was excellent but a fotnight later the landlord decamped and the place was shut for a long time.  It's a long time ago so I don't know what it's like now.  I cooked some beef on the rib last night, God knows how I'll ever stop eating and putting weight on....  I've put half a stone on this year after getting down to 13 stone.......

We went to The Buck at Paythorn about 2 months ago, it is not as good as it was 10 years ago.The food isnt the problem its the pub itself that seems to have lost the country feel, thats what you get for trying to modernise an old pub.

It's a big problem isn't it.  I know that we have to have progress but some terrible design crimes are committed in the interests of 'refurbishment'.

I'll bet H&S has struck again.  There is a really good open fire in the pub at Aysgarth.

Got taken out for a meal last night at The Harpers Inn at Wheatley Lane . Now serves Thai food and 9 of us had a banquet. Never had Thai food before and this was superb - especially the starters- ribs, Thai spring rolls, satay chicken, chicken toasts and prawn and chicken soup. One of the main courses, duck in oyster sauce was particularly nice.Bar serves Black Sheep but it wasn't a paricularly good pint. However we shall be returning and I would recommend it. Nolic
