While passing St Michael's Church in Othery, Somerset, this weekend I saw there was scaffolding on top of the tower. They are probably strengthening the corner pinnacle because one of these fell down and through the church roof in the past. When told about that incident I asked if the insurance group declared it an act of God but they didn't get the joke.

Alan, no.
Swifty, nothing done but as I walked round the other day I saw some blokes from a fencing firm measuring up, perhaps for a quotation? Looking at the foundy pics, is it any wonder that the industry has migrated to China and India?

its a shame that it has stanley most of the scrap here gets sent to china how much can it cost in this country to refine materials and return it back into our system , it can be shipped to china refined and shipped back for less ,something is seriously wrong at the end of the day gt britain is a island that can sustain its self and yet we still import everything because its cheaper to do so why do we need to import beef/ lamb its a mystery.

Swifty,
There's nowt like loading up the truck with a " freebie " stack of copper, brass and Uncle Ned----and after the bountious cashing in at the scrapyard--passing over wads o'greenbacks to a busty barmaid serving foaming pints of Pendle Witch or John Willie Lees finest ale. By Golly, how I miss axeing up those knackered mill boilers!

Have a look at this Swifty. Yet another example of how countries with lax H&S and environmental laws can steal an industry. My mate Daniel went out there and photographed it and he said it was a scene from hell. Most of the plates were cut with big chisels and sledge hammers and the whole place was polluted. When the labourers went home at night they searched them to make sure they weren't stealing rivet heads and bolts. They were so poor that these were worth stealing to sell and pay for food.

And yet when we want to take on a contract in the UK to take apart contaminated American ships under controlled conditions on Tyneside the public gets all agitated about it.

Swifty, you should take up sea diving as a hobby then you could go on holiday to sunny locations and dismantle old battleships on the seabed to make a bit on the side. Mind you, the future might be in satellites and space rockets that have past their sell-by date. Only trouble is, you've got to get em before they burn up on re-entry!
