Point taken Frank, but it is nice to be acknowledge when one posts, even if it's with "Not sure what to say to that!"
Stanley here's the best link i can get, not as true to the film as i would have liked, but lovely none the less: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jwBrDkV5XU

The last news I saw on the dead bird issue was leaning towards new years eve fireworks, very large displays in a concentrated area causing confusion/shock/poor air/toxic fumes etc as being the cause. The deaths were not over a large area so that could be a reasonable explanation, at least until the post mortems are completed.

Herb, that would make sense. Jack says all fireworks belong to the devil!
Belle, Nice clip but a bit too early in the morning! And some people say the Bible is boring! I often read parts of it, as literature and for entertainment, I have no time for the people who regard it as perfect truth. It's a collection of myth and legend, some of which has a factual base, but not much!
The US government report on the Macondo blow-out has been published and their overall verdict is that BP, Transocaen amd Halliburton were cutting costs. The lawyers will now step in and reap their harvest in court cases between those three. Buy the wife a new hat lads!
I was surprised to hear on World Service that the world price of coking coal for steel-making has risen by 10% because the Queensland mines are at a virtual standstill because of the floods. I didn't know that Queensland supplies half the worlds supplied of coking coal.

I see in this mornings paper the birds are falling from the sky in Sweden yesterday - they cannot blame that on fireworks. Sounds more like a poison cloud.

According to last nights news this was not an uncommon occurance..........? andin some place the birds had been sprayed with water and sugar so that they would freeze to death when the cold weather hit, a way of keeping numbers down which has been used regularly!.....don't you just love the world's double standards!

Normally you wouldn't hear about all these incidents of mass bird deaths but if one incident gets into international news (as it's likely to do nowadays with 24-hour running news) then the journalists look for any similar ones and report them. The result is that we readers get the impression that it's unusual, a plague, a warning of forthcoming doom etc etc.
Birds are vulnerable especially when something affects them in flight - a brief confusion or lack of consciousness and they can drop from the sky and break their necks. If they fly into (or are engulfed by) a cloud of noxious gas (as with the fireworks) or freezing cold air (as with the weather) they haven't much chance. Or they could be stunned by an explosion.
As for fish, they are vulnerable to anything that gets into the water, either a poison or any organic material that will cause the water to lose its oxygen (such as milk Stanley). One of the drainage ditchs near us in the Somerset Levels had about 100 fish (roach) lying dead on the surface a few days ago. A fishing friend told me it wasn't the thick ice because they can survive below that, and he has reported the incident to the Environment Agency. I suspect road salt may have got into the ditch - all that salt has to go somewhere. And maybe birds are drinking water with road salt in it too.

2 million dead fish wash up on the east coast of the USA, attributed to cold weather.

Did they count the pectoral fins and divide by two?

That's a good point Tiz about journos doing a search for dead birds and surprise! they find it is a fairly common accurrance. Think of the number that are killed by big volcanic events. Looking at the news item about the way Mother Nature has dealt with the methane from the Macondo well, perhaps in many cases the death of a large number of users of an eco-system react to the increased amount of food available and breed back to the numbers. The old farmers always used to say that sheep die back to the number a moor will support if you put too many out to graze.

Sorry, Stanley.
As I said, I can select any of the options to change the skin EXCEPT Frosty Sky and no matter which one I select, even though the skin changes, the "Frost Sky" title remains locked in the window, highlighted in yellow.
This is EXACTLY the same problem I experienced around Christmas 2009. I couldn't fix it then and I can't fix it now ...... Simple as that.

Did you all listen to the Radio 4 `More or Less' episode on Christmas Eve? It was very funny, but educational too. The BBC blurb says: "Boom. Bust. Bah humbug. Tim Harford narrates 'A More or Less Christmas Carol' in which British Bank plc boss Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by the ghosts of banking past, present and future. Will he heed their warnings?".
If not, I recommend you download the BBC podcast and listen to it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/moreorless
"Perhaps in many cases the death of a large number of users of an eco-system react to the increased amount of food available and breed back to the numbers" - Stanley
This is a fundamental part of ecology. A population of any organism expands to the limit then collapses back to numbers below the limit and starts again. The population size isn't stable, it oscillates (it's not stable because the environment is never truly stable and if one population fluctuates in numbers it causes other populations to fluctuate). It's not only humans who suffer boom & bust.

I reckon it is gravity doing it to the birds and anti-gravity doing the fish. BEEBE, Ark. — Preliminary autopsies on 17 of the up to 5,000 blackbirds that fell on this town indicate they died of blunt trauma to their organs, the state's top veterinarian told NBC News on Monday.
So it looks as though It was gravity that caused it.

In todays Mail there is a full page article on the birds saga - the Americans are blaming death-ray testing, or UFO collisions, or even the beginning of Armageddon - apparently we are in the 'transition period' now. The first lot fell just before midnight on New Years eve when they would be roosting, so could not be up in the sky. Fireworks have been ruled out because they happen every New Year's Eve and this bird thing has not happened before.
