Tesco are considering opening a store in Barnoldswick.

They claim it will create 175 jobs and keep shoppers in the town, as well as saving local firm L&P Springs.

There are 2 exhibitions taking place this Friday and Saturday for people to gain more information.

Views, anyone?

I think Richard's recollections of Skipton may be clouded by his memories of queuing up at the Lightbite whilst snuggled up in his duffle coatWink

I don't think you are being too optimistic Richard, very much how I see it. No opinion on Skipton, I haven't walked up the High Street for yonks. Will the car-shoppers be attracted to Tesco and mean less cars parked outside shops in the town? (The poor things seem to have lost the use of their legs, look how underused the Rainhall Road car park is. Too far from the shops!)

Personally I have nothing against Tesco coming. It is a private enterprise and it will decide whether or not it can survive here. I have serious doubts that it will prove economic. I know that any shops Barlick loses will not be replaced when Tesco pulls out. As can be seen in Nelson, the old town shops are currently being looked at for re-zoning as housing because of the empty retail units in the "shed"

I am, however, concerned about the loss of a brown field site that will no longer be available for any industry wishing to relocate here or expand and bring more relatively better skilled jobs. Any new industrial  unit would have to be on new green field or elsewhere, thus re-inforcing a loss of talent and entrenching the satellite nature of the town.

News I heard today about a development in Colne may well have a negative impact on Tesco progressing in Barlick.

There will still be Barnsey, Coates Mill and a large area off Ravenscroft, cleared and waiting.

Are there Lidls in UK  ?....are you kidding.....

If I didn't visit my local branch at least once every  36 hours , they would send someone round to see if I was O.K. !

After Spotify (and it's close ) Lidl is the Ninth Wonder of the World .

How big is the proposed Store ( superstore Skipton sized or something smaller ?  )

Tesco are good at providing general range of produce and products and with their metrics of population / clubcard feedback and so on good at providing local best sellers. As appears to have already been noted some local shops in Barnoldswick have better , fresher , greener range of products , at prices less than many supermarkets ( but tesco does cut prices below cost on some ranges - watch out shoppers you may come away spending more than you think due to impluse buys - which reduces cash to spend elsewhere in the town ).  I think it is the Co-Op which might suffer the most , I have found from elsewhere , in my opinion , that Co-Op products are unattactively packaged , expensive in cash terms and as a store dont have a wide or complete range when compared with Tesco or many other supermarket chains.

Interesting to note that the Co-op has had a makeover this week.

There seems to be a wider range of goods and the staff have clearly been on an intensive customer relations training course.

We find that by using our Co-op membership card, their prices are not so far away from the big supermarkets when you get your divi vouchers, especially when you consider the lower travel costs.

Do we really need a Tesco in Barlick?  I'm leaning towards the No vote quite heavily now.

Did you know "Every Little Helps" is Tesco's slogan in the UK? Was that an incisive play on words? If so, very clever - nice one.Yay

Heather, sorry to go off piste but Doc had a message and I didn't know what to do with it. I know Edith speaks Esperanto so I'm passing it on here. Perhaps we need a new topic?

In the "Adresaro de la Esperantistoj", published in Nuernberg, Germany, in 1903 is a list of new Esperanto-speakers who put their mnam, ers forward between January 1902 and January are Alban Atkinson and Nellie H. Atkinson of 70 Eaton Bank, Barnoldswick. I presume this Alban Atkinson is the one b 21 Mar 1871. Doctor Zamenhof gave them the numbers 7322 and 7323. It's strange to think of pioneers of this planned international language coming from Barlick. Did they leave any booklets, letters or diaries, I wonder?

Doc has the bloke's email address if it's needed. Not sure why je thought it strange....

I am not in favour of Tesco opening here.  I moved from Skipton to Barlick 5 years ago becasue I felt Skipton's town centre was going rapidly downhill.  It is only busy now with tourists.  There are no shops left for locals, just cafes, charity shops etc.
In contrast Barlick has some excellent shops, many mentioned already - butchers, bakers, groceries, cooked meat, cleaning supplies etc.  All of these will be threatened by a Tesco opening.  To say I will have the choice whether to shop at Tesco or to continue to use local shops is shortsighted and over optimistic.  Tesco will force their closure.  Even though the produce the local shops sell is usually far superior, I fear people will be seduced by the convenience of buying everything in one place and will only bemoan the loss of the independent shops when it is too late.

According to my mother there were several groups in this area - often associated with chapels - where people would gather round and have a "conversazione" in the new Esperanto language. Notable speakers in Barlick were the Mallinson twin sisters.

I wonder whether Alban was the brother of Carr, who used to live in my house and whose father wrote one of the first history books about Barnoldswick.

Twiceover Two (can I just call you Four for short?) thanks for your observations. I agree with you.

Well, ive just made a poster to go in my window! im really not an activist but i feel that if local people who dont want tesco, dont make a stand, then it will happen and we wont be able to moan about it. email me at debihawkins@yahoo.co.uk if you want to see my poster, if you like it you can print it out and put it in your window too - obviously if something more official is distributed i will go with it , but in the mean time -----

Why not take a photo and post it on here? I'd love to see it. I think a poster is a great idea.
