I'm posting this as an awful warning to anyone who has occasion to send anything to Australia using wooden packaging.  For the full story see the topic 'Shed Culture' on www.oneguyfrombarlick.co.uk

Basically the problem is that Australia, quite sensibly, is attempting to stop pests being imported inadvertently into the continent as infestations in wood used for packing cases and pallets.  In order to do this they require all wood used for such purposes to be certificated as properly treated and infestation free.  I have no doubt that it would be possible for a private individual to obtain suitable timber, build the case and get it certified but I think that it would be far more expensive in terms of both time and money than getting a specialised firm to make the case for you.

Through friends I found a family firm, Crating Solutions in Hull.  An email to
  sales@cratingsolutions.co.uk
will find a nice man called Mark who will give you a complete solution.  Don't let cost put you off.  I spent £15 at the local woodyard and spent ten hours making a case which was useless.  Crating Solutions are making one for me for £50.  This case is fully certified and ready to go.  No contest I reckon.....

Don't be tempted to chance it, there could be severe repercussions.  The Australian authorities have the power to quarantine the case, unpack it and repack it under hazardous waste conditions and no doubt charge you an arm and a leg for the privilege.  Alternatively they can reject the consignment and your carrier charges you again for bringing it back.  Funnily enough, none of the shippers I spoke to mentioned the regulations....

So, be warned, it is a minefield and it was only because friends on Oneguy noted what I was doing and flagged up the regulations that saved me from a big mistake.......

Yes its true, strange though that Australia allows timber from many Asian manufacturers enter the country without such proceedures although all containers are bombed with pestacide. Its not just timber from the UK many parts of the world when people go OS touring picking up nick nacks they are confisgated when they land.

Customs services often seem to go out of their way to make life difficult. In our 15 years of selling books worlwide we learnt to avoid certain things and do others if we wanted our books to ever get to customers in the US and Canada.

The fully cerified packing case still serves as the SG Memorial Toilet Roll store in the bathroom. Engines are still on the shelf in the front room. Daughter Janet is eventually going to ship some stuff to Oz and she has assumed the responsibility for the engines.
