Or BWMG for short. My eldest Niece was until retirement, Editor of a local newspaper. So I asked Her advice yesterday about how best to proceed when dealing with publicity, She has mailed the local paper concerned copied to me, something is in there that I was unaware of, this is copied from the e/mail:
"Hannah: A small group has been formed in a bid to have names missing from Barnoldswick's war memorial added.
Apparently there are 11 in total and much research has been carried out via newspaper archives with, I am told, some interesting stories.
As you are aware, there is a plan to move the memorial from the town square to the Memorial Gardens in 2012".

I have looked back through the appeal topic and the closest thing was the first reply in which one of our members expressed concern over the state of the Memorial and the Memorial Gardens, this is the first time I have heard mention of the Memorial being moved. If this is correct it would be the ideal time for additions to be carried out. The above figure of 11 names may yet increase, but I am fairly certain that the evidence I hold at present for those 11 will be acceptable. I will post the draft today although it needs a little more work, this is in effect a "Crib Sheet" for the press who will no doubt alter it to best suit their purpose, but the information it contains is as accurate as is possible at present.

BARNOLDSWICK MAN IN THE DARDANELLES
Driver H. Fay, grandson of Mr. Bob Whalley, of Arthur Street, Barnoldswick, writing from Florinna Hospital at Malta, to Mrs. A.T. Scott, of 169, Burnlea Terrace, Gisburn Road, Barnoldswick, gives some of his impressions of the fighting in the Dardanelles. He says:- "I suppose you know I have been in the Dardanelles for two months, and it was a bit hot. I was, however, sent away from the Dardanelles with enteric fever, and I have been on milk diet for a month. I have been through it since I have been on active service, I can tell you. I don't think the Turks will stick it long. They have had an awful licking. Our boys just showed them how to fight. Our John (his brother), has been wounded in the neck and arm. I don't think he will be any use for work again. I suppose I shall have to go out again after I have had a furlough. Well, I came through without a scratch once, and I can do it again with a bit of luck."

1/4th Bn. East Lancashire Regiment
JUNE 1915
Third Battle of Krithia (4th). 'D' Company and 1 platoon of 'C' moved forward with 1st Essex 12 noon. Led attack from right of Ghurka Bluff towards Krithia. Leading waves met with strong rifle and machine gun fire upon leaving trenches. First three lines of Turkish trenches taken within few minutes. Attack continued - 4th line carried by 3 p.m. and consolidated. Casualties - Lieutenants P. Wolf and H.W. Whalley, Second Lieutenants T.A. Heywood and C. Crewe, 32 other ranks killed; 2 officers 159 other ranks wounded; 2 officers, 14 other ranks missing.

[John Fay was one of the missing.]

Now for a quick re-shuffle.

Peter, I can see you are editing the draft for the press as you go along. Can you add the fact that we intend to continue our search for missing personnel through WWII and subsequent conflicts.

I think the full intention of what we are trying to achieve should be in the initial release especially as later losses are likely to be within living memory of current generations of families. We may get some feedback because of this.

I did that last night Ian when I interviewed the reporter, yes it was that way round. She left on the understanding that unless she hears from me to the contrary, it will go in the paper next week. I know Christmas is almost upon us but I believe its time to make a start. The contact situation at present will be via the press, there will be regular update features at suitable intervals and she would like to attend our first meeting. She is also now aware that this doesnt end with WW1 names on the Memorial and that a publication is planned for the future. She also was introduced to the CPGW book and the website and has had a glimpse of some of the pressworthy material on my hard drive.

I assume the reporter was form the 'Leader Times" franchise Peter. Will the article go in the Colne and Nelson editions as well as the BET?

Have you sent the draft to the Craven Herald as well? Normal press releases from Barlick would go to both publishers for best coverage of the area. If it does'nt go to them with the same opportunity to give cover it may be seen as old news if offered later.

Update time: e/mail this morning from Hannah of the BET confirming inclusion in the BET, Colne Times and Nelson Leader, She is going to add her e/mail address for contact. Also I have just spoken with the Craven Herald Barlick reporter and there is to be a "Photo Shoot" tomorrow morning, Wednesday 21st, at the town memorial time, app 1030 hrs, interested parties welcome. This will not make the paper this week but will be in a different format to other press stories.

Well, it didn't rain, much! Job done, thank you Ian and Ken. Busy afternoon though, last week I took a carload of toys to the old Blackburn Orphans Home at Langho, now the home of "Child Action Northwest", I have just returned after three more trips. Some poor kid will have a better Christmas after all.

I had a long call from the Craven Herald reporter this morning ref the information that I have, the upshot being that they are looking for update stories to keep their initial article flowing. This may be in next weeks paper, possibly the one after. I found the BET article on page 8 and I have a feeling that CH may be a better one. Ian, I am about to begin a "clean up" on what I have to date, this will entail highlighting those who are buried at Ghyll amongst other things, all three of the Sergeants on our list of eleven appear to be buried there, two of which are not on your list, I will re-check and advise you of this.
I have given permission for the CH to use my e/mail address for any responses.

The BET article has scored one hit, I now have a contact who has letters written aboard the Rohilla and I have sent Colin Brittain a PM.
