Tom,
Did you know of another steeplejack of Burnley, William O Hara who was quite wekk know years ago ? I did have photos of Maurice tate high on laddered structures and in an article by Jimmy Mac of Burnley Express Maurice told of being on a stack when the top collapsed and a jack fell to his death. Maurice was commended for saving the life of the apprentice when he threw a rope to the lad which the boy tied to his waist .

I see they are demolishing the Dorma factory on Casterton Avenue in Burnley - does anyone know if the chimney stack has to come down?

Tom, I have read more on Maurice Tate. The Burnley Express told of the young maurice meeting a steeplejack on his way to draw dole. This guy said Maurice could work with him, so Maurice became a steeplejack that same day. It claimed Maurice carried out work on 300 stacks in East Lancs. alone? and was as famous as Fred? The Chimney where Jimmy O Hara lost his life was the Orchard Mill in Padiham . Maurice and the apprentice made it down. Is all this fact or fiction. Maurice did come across as a romancer in his newspaper article with Jimmy Mac. Any comments on all this ? Vic

Vic ,ive heard diffrent tales about Maurice Tate,he was deffinately a councilor so romance and spin would be right,hehe,i'll see what "facts" i can find out ...
Good photo Stanley,I remember Peter having a box full of 9" b/w pictures of that job...
Moh,if its the one i think it is its all coming down,they'll be able to pull the stack down with an high reach machine..

I know for a fact, I never climbed anywhere near 300 stacks in my time and thank heaven for that I must say.

Do some pics Moh. I went to night school at Nelson and Colne College with a very nice lady called Nuala who lived on the left hand side of the avenue near the traffic lights on the main road. We once had a very intersting meal in a cellar in London with another wonderful old lady called Florence..... I'll bet she's never forgotten it. Unusual name, you might know her. I might have a pic.... I'll go and look.

Found it. Nuala on the left and Florence on the right. Florence id dead but I wonder if you recognise Nuala?

No sorry - name sounds Irish. The mill is on the left, just past the hospital which is on the right (coming from the Colne Road traffic lights). The chimney has a metal 'thing' on the top.

Worked on that chimney Moh about 4 yrs ago just before it shut down ,it was Red Rose fabrics or something like that,we did a quick repair job so they could put telephone masts on it...
Vic 300 chimneys is only 10 a year for 30 years,i can remember laddering 10+ in a week,it doesn't seem as many when you work it out like that..
