Following the recent discussion about chippies in Barlick, I was wondering whether there's merit in creating a new Forum for reviews of local eating out places? And pubs? This would benefit newcomers/visitors as well as locals. I would be happy to write reviews of the local restaurants and pubs - a tedious and arduous task but someone's gotta do it The beauty of a website like OGFB is that several people could comment on the same place - one person's meat is another person's poison - so the reader would get a fair and balanced idea, unlike newspaper reviews which depend on the mood of the reviewer on just one occasion.

Cally, if you can force yourself to do it, I thiink that would be a fantastic idea.
We never know where to eat when we pop up (more Barrowford area for me please). A place that looks lovely doesn't necessarily serve up good food.
Likewise, if any of you make it to the potteries....a little pub just on the outskirts of the city (in the Uttoxeter direction) is a great little eaterie. Charlie Bassetts at Dilhorne is the place. We take all our business clients there. Good freshly cooked food (not too sure on the chips as I tend to opt for tatties), generous servings and extremely good value for money. Staff are friendly too which helps!

Malty, not much in Barrowford bar a packet of pork scratchings at The Vic. Italian on the "new" block is expensive and over rated. Sun Inn at Blacko is supposed to be OK for snacks - so says Gundred who works there.
My favourite locally is The Lanehead / Fanny Greys above Salterforth on the top road to Barlick from Barrowford. Good quality food, nice beer and reasonable prices.
We used to like The Moorcock on the road from Blacko to Gisburn but have not been there for a while.
Punch Bowl at Earby has new owners and is supposed to be very good. Nolic

Although I've heard good things about the food, I've not been in t'Lane Head as someone I dislike is a regular there, but I'm planning to check out Jester's and The Foster's Arms (under new management). I've recently been in Mario's and Victoria's Needle, so will write them up soon. (Both worth visiting, by the way.) |

Whats the one on the roundabout (just off the M65) where you can go along into Barrowford or up that bypass thing to Fence? Looks like a brewers fayre type place.....do you have those up there? Anyway, is it any good?
And what about the heritage centre? I've only had a cuppa in there. What's their snappin like?
I am thinking more of lunch times than evenings as I tend to head home just in time for rush hour.

The pub by m/way and by-pass is the Thatch and Thistle. Never been in but I've not heard it rated for its food - lunchtime will probably be full of students from N & C college. Heritage is expensive rubbish - Gundred used to work there. Try the Sparrowhawk on the back road from Fence to B/ford - signposted left off the bypass coming towards B/ford . Then there is the Forest Inn - signed right off bypass again coming to B/ford - good food but definately pricey. Nolic

Best ones I've either been to or are on my list to visit 'cos of recommendations are:
PUBS: Moorcock, Gisburn Road (been about half a dozen times, liked), Fanny Grey, Barrowford Road (been twice, liked), Tempest at Elslack (been once, liked), Bay Horse, Fence (recommended by colleague, next on list as excellent veggie selection), Sparrowhawk, Fence (recommended, still on list but new menu low on veggie options). Also, the Rising Sun in Blacko is supposed to do a nice Sunday lunch.
I have actually eaten at the Thatch eand Thistle, but it's since changed management. It was quite nice food, but very noisy pub. No idea what the new look and feel is like.
RESTAURANTS: Have been to and liked Carlos (Colne), The Massala Room (Foulridge) and Marios (Barlick). I'd love to try the Original Greek in Colne, the Jade Palace in Earby and the Wellsprings at Sabden.
Also - Kelbrook fisheries is technically a cafe/restaurant and there food is top. I'm also a big fan of Oddfellows cafe in Nelson for yummy grub, pleasant service and lovely coffee.

That's the Thatch and Thistle.
The Heritage Centre has a lovely cafe - highly recommended. They also do some gorgeous ice-cream cones :)

Places I would go for lunch:
In Nelson, Oddfellows cafe on Manchester Road near the HSBC. I've eaten there a few times and really enjoyed it - you can get a surprising variety of stuff including Quorn chilli and home made soups.
In Barrowford, the Heritage Centre. It isn't cheap but I think their food is okay and well varied, unlike Another ;P
In Barlick - Victoria's Needle. it's generally good grub, very cheap.
In Brierfield - The Junction 12 mill. Their cafe is pretty nice if you like plain, good food, and there's a balcony over a restored bit of canal to sit out on in the summer.
In Barley - the Barley Mow.

You can't beat Jim's Caff in Colne for excellent - and I mean excellent - vegetarian food. The decor is, well, let's just say "unique". The atmosphere is relaxed. You can play their piano too, if you got the urge. My friend was horrified to find that all the crockery matched the last time she visited. Said it spoilt the "ambience"! There's often live music too. It's unlikely you'll get in unless you book (which is a good sign if ever there was) - their phone number is 868828. |

I have created a new forum called Eating Out, this is where you can post individual topics named after the place you ate at, That way anyone who is trying to find an individual venue can find it by name.

Cally, could you put an area code with the phone number please. Saves us tourists hunting.
Thank you
