I thought it might be a good thing to have a topic devoted to this important subject.

Pete, I'd be happy to debate this with you but New Year's day is a bit too busy for it! In brief, there is a vast amount of scientific evidence that "global warming" (increase in the earth's average surface temperature) is increasing at a dangerous rate (dangerous to humans), that we are a major cause of that increase (probably the major cause), and that we can do something about it by using less energy and by changing our sources of energy.
I'm science-trained but in biology/chemistry, not geology or climate science. But I've read a lot of the basic science involved in the debate to give me a better understanding and I can now see why most scientists believe the summary given above is the best assessment we can make at present. What makes things worse is that the scientists were warning the politicians about the problem more than 10 years ago but they didn't take action, partly through failing to understand what it was all about and partly through the lobbying by vested interests (money talking!)
I don't know your background and whether you already have a knowledge of geology (earth sciences). If you want to know more about the issue I would recommend reading some basic geology on the formation of the earth, its oceans and atmosphere. Having a grasp of geological time scales (millions of years) helps! (Sorry it this sounds condescending - it's not meant to be!)
I'm not an environmental campaigner or a global warming zealot. I just look at the facts and make my own deductions. Just like I don't support any political party or religion. Certainty is dangerous because no-one can really be certain. But we do need to make decisions and take approritae action, even if we are not certain.

'Certainty is dangerous because no-one can really be certain'
Quite. Which is why I am comfortable with my assessment of the evidence. On the whole I follow your belief Tiz but take comfort from the fact that even if we are both wrong, cutting back on the emission of pollutants can do nothing but good using a completely different set of criteria.

Thanks for that Tiz. Yes, after I asked at Briggs and Duxbury's they started stocking it. I told them it was nice to know we had a firm in the town that listened to customers.

Listened to the government's chief scientific officer explaining the long overdue recognition of the need to encourage home food production. How this squares with allowing things like milk production go to the wall has yet to be resolved. Tim Lang from City University was on next with his usual common sense. Then we had the spokesman for the supermarkets who spouted the most specious drivel about the cathedrals of choice being at the forefront of protection of food choices. How people like that are allowed to lie openly beats me. I'd like toi see a barrister do a cross examination of a spokesperson like that based on a forensic analysis of a transcript of what he said. Of course, that'd the reason why they get away with propaganda like that. There are still people who believe that they are the champions of cheap healthy food!

The trouble is, a lot of people believe them.
Strange isn't it, how people have become less easily taken in by religion and church yet are now so gullible when supermarkets and other businesses claim to be doing such a wonderful job.

Speaking of gullible. I have just started Nigel Lawson's book "An appeal to reqason". He's not having any of it regarding global warming. Interesting to see Environment Secretary Hilary Benn basing future policy on drought conditions, when GB is still claiming credit for dealing with the floods of 2007, and the next two summers have been very wet. Why do they continually try to worry us?

Anyone who doubts that climate change/global warming/pressure on resources isn't of immediate concern is barking mad and should be ignored.
Anybody who has been advised of the facts, given the forecast and refuses to take meaningful action is a public enemy.

Stanley I don't doubt Climate Change what I do doubt is that this bunch of second rate comedians are capable of planning for Climate Change. Two questions one " Is this reversible " and two why did The Goverment Raise Tax, on Motor Vehicles rather than Commissioning the Construction of New Nucler Power Stations ??? Very few people doubt Climate Change what people do doubt is that anyone can do anything about it. If my car is responsible for Climate Change all I can say is God help us all. Has this been building up for a 100 + years going back to the dark Satanic Mill days ?? I wonder

"barking mad and should be ignored"
I suppose that means I should save myself the bother of reading what he has to say then?.

What you need to do Tripps is weigh up early on whether Lawson has made the effort to understand the basic scientific facts of climate change. There's a lot of the "We had a hot climate in the 1200s and grew grapes" type of claims about which aren't relevant to the issues we face now.
Frank, if this climate change isn't reversible then we'd best all go and enjoy ourselves now while we can. You are right about people doubting whether we can tackle it successfully. If we can't get the US to make big cuts in emissions how do we get China and India to do it?
Another reason for us in the UK to be concerned is that we are vulnerable due to our dependence on the Gulf Stream for our warm maritime climate. The Gulf Stream could easily be disrupted by melting ice in the Arctic or other climate change factors. If it goes, then the UK (and the coastline of north-western Europe) will be bitterly cold. Of course there is a slight possibility that the cold could then locally balance the global warming effect. But most scientists think that's too much to expect!.
