We've just had a few days down in Skipton, and had a good time and a good sail back.
Well almost a good sail, we got talking about the state of the canal through Barlick. Y'know its getting a little drab, especially the section from the RR factory to Ouzledale. Its strewn with rubbish, shallow and sometimes its the haunt of a few menacing teenagers. Two were hanging off the bridge this afternoon and were being egged on to "kick her in the 'ead" The head in question was my wifes, she was stood on the bow of the boat. The egging mouthy little lass had her phone ready to take a photo if one of the lads had a go....he didnt, lucky chap.
I wont mention the condition of Greenberfield locks since BW sold off the cottage.
We always tell other boaters how beautiful the canal is from Barrowford locks to Skipton. We may start have to start telling them to be careful sailing through Barlick though.
And thats a shame....

Get Big Kev to stand on the front of your boat, no one would mess with you then!

My mate has a Vickers (de-act, of course) we could set it up on the bow, and Ive met Big Kev ('big 'lad).....but really the biggest problem that needs tackling is the state of the stretch of canal I mentioned earlier. Its grotty, and its the only grotty stretch between Barrowford Locks and Bingley, and it's in BARLICK!!

This is the response I got to my email to David Whipp British Waterways are responsible for clearing rubbish on their land.
I am forwarding this to Pendle’s cleansing enforcement staff for them to take it up with BW. (Experience elsewhere in Pendle is that BW are not very responsive to such requests – if they don’t act, a legal notice could be served on them to require them to tidy up). Not sure if such action can be taken about rubbish in the canal itself – will need to check this.
I am also forwarding this to the sergeant of our local policing team, so that they are aware of the threatening behaviour.
Ian McInery, from Pendle Council, has confirmed he is going to discuss the issue with British Waterways

I would like to suggest to anyone who has any interest in the canal locally, should pay a visit to the workings of the proposed new marina down by doug moores boatyard, on the other side of the bridge, The canal has been dammed to assist in the earthworkings, the project looks huge, well worth a walk along the towpath for a look at whats going on.

I haven't been dow there for a while, I'll have a look. I think the sign comes under the heading of stating the bleeding obvious! I wonder why they bothered?

Well Stanley, theres always some Barnes Wallace type who may attempt the breaching.....P.S. if you look at my video you will see how some swans overcome the dams.

Believe me, that sign is needed. I recall a brew time one Friday morning and a school teacher with a boat and a young lady off for a trip out and heading at max speed for Cockshot bridge. And there he is, gnome hat firmly in place, glass of wine in hand, waving away to us happily (and we are waving back frantically and shouting warnings) as he passed out of sight behind the floating dock, less than 50 yards to the bridge. Perhaps I should now mention that BW are fitting a concrete saddle to the bridge and that there is a scaffold in place beneath it, a lightweight one that given fair warning can be swung around to allow passage under the bridge. It takes about five minutes to accomplish this. "Hark" engine full astern, "Bang" boat hits stonework on left of bridge, "Splash x 2" BW men take early bath. Air is now blue. Oh yes always be prepared for the unexpected.

Marvelous story Peter, saw it in my minds eye and had to laugh out loud, once saw a similar occurance at the silentnight bridge, when a lady was steering a narrow boat through, what you imagine is an easy navigating area, not to this poor dear, somehow she seemed to oversteer and of course she panicked which made matters worse, and bang into the side of the bank, to say her hubby was not too pleased would be a gross understatement , same blue air......much to the amusement of quite a few of us watching from the bridge above.
