As there seems to be quite a bit of artistic talent around here, I thought I would start a pencil sketch section .....

I was just reading back in this topic and I saw Tiz's reference to scientists and colour. I too struggled with this when I started painting but not now as I accept that true colours are wavelengths of light where as pigments are not true colours but a mixture of many and the art of colour mixing is balancing the proportions of these , to suit your own needs by mixing with others of opposite or complimentary combinations . I hope I have understood that correctly.
The eye percieves the colour by detecting the relative amounts of each wavelength reflected by each of the colours in the pigments into the eye. The red, green and blue cones ( on the retina) are activated in the proportions of these colours in the pigments and lo and behold the brain says pthallo blue or whatever pigment combination you have

I once asked Peter why he didn't gat a new jerkin and he said that you couldn't get them but his was a safety aid. It was tied round the waste with a ladder lasing and so he always had a spare if he needed it. He also said that when the flaps of the heavy leather at the bottom started flapping he knew it was time to get off the stack!

Latest attempt, the grandaughter playing and laughing, she's 2,I find childrens faces are much harder to draw than owd steeplejacks ,no contours or creases, all very light pencil work to bring out the features in a childs mush....

Cheers Rob,ive just bought some sketching pencils and blocks, all cheap ,the pencils are far better than using normal pencils,6 different grades, the blocks are very harsh and nasty but they come in a nice case so i'll keep them, hehe

![Arm in Ventilator](files/pictures/79/270/20081019153011_1812_1_rs.JPG) Just thought I would post a drawing, as my dad seems to spend his time showing his watercolours.

Very good drawing, what is it?,it looks like your dads locked you inside a twin tub washing machine and told you to draw what you see, hehe, the shading is excellent...

I think, so I am informed, that it is some fancy " proper" artist who drew strange subjects, like an arm in a ventilation shaft.
They should be teaching them how to draw proper subjects like factories and chimneys......
