It's the fumes rising from your feet that do that.

Colin, the book landed and I have had an enjoyable read. Forget the things you'd like to change, you have a talent for writing and should do more.  I've posted this review on Lulu.

STEEPLEJACK ORIGINS BY COLIN LOGAN

This is a delightful first publication by a practical man writing about what he knows best, his job. It is brief but covers all the bases. Colin starts from the beginning, with the Bayeux Tapestry surprisingly and traces the evolution of work on high structures from the ‘steeple climbers’ and ‘Aerial Flyers’ of the 18th century through the first practical steeplejacks to the modern methods of access by abseiling. Every page is full of interesting facts and perhaps more importantly, he points us towards obscure but essential sources of further information. As someone once commented on Steeplejack’s Corner on the oneguyfrombarlick website, “Everyone knows about steeplejacks but nobody knows about them”. This book is a good start on the road to understanding what these skilled artisans do for a living. It is not exhaustive but is as good an introduction as you will find anywhere. Books written and published by practical men are thin on the ground and we would do well to take notice of them when they appear. Highly commended.

Thanks for the good review Stanley, i havent received my copy yet but if you say it's OK then that's good enough for me. Your analysis justified my intention, that was to start at the earliest possible documented time and fill in the gap between then and now with actual documented chronological events, people and techniques, and  try to portray the how the trade has evolved to what it is today, and your comments confirm that i got it about right. Now i can relax.... Cool

No you can't! You have to start writing down your own experiences in the trade. That way people will know even more about steeplejerks.

Hi all, well done with the book Col..I reckon a good book would be stories from jacks telling of "adventures" whilst lodging away from home in digs. I once mistook Crocs bed for the sink after a night on the Old Peculiar.Lets just say its a good job the heating wasnt on else there would have been a rainbow over his pillow!!!lolol

Wink..if it stinks of Marmite,it probably is Marmite. Go to Top of Page
