Hi,
I'm new to this site, and was very happy to find an old file with lots of details re: Cockshotts in your area (copied below for ease of reference because searches bring it up inside a backup file, which made it difficult to find it again just now). I will go through that info very thoroughly, but in the meantime, I was hoping someone could help us find anything to do with the family of a John Cockshott (abt 1820-abt 1891), who was apparently born in Barnoldswick (he is on my tree is at Ancestry.co.uk at http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/6172160/person/2059938964). He married Sarah (Preston) Lawson on 6 Nov 1841 in Bolton By Bowland, who was the widow of a Francis Lawson of Gisburn - but we unfortunately have no info on Francis or his family. We know that John Cockshott's father was called Thomas - no idea when he was born, or anything about his wife and family.
Later generations of these Cockshotts emigrated to Canada in 1903 and are in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. So, I'm helping my brother-in-law in Canada find his UK ancestors.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide on this family, J.B.

I was just about to ask whether there might be a connection, when ChrissyP posted the pic. Here's another, from our walks book:
Is there any documentary evidence of a link, or could it just be a coincidence that the name matches?

Cockshotts were an important family. Here's an extract from the articles I wrote about the Bracewells.
'Let’s finish dealing with William(1756). He was slightly premature with the 1819 will, he added a codicil in 1830 shortly before he died. This is basically the same range of bequests but as his son William(1782) died young in 1827 he leaves all that share of the property to John Cockshott of Bracewell to hold in trust for his grandchildren by William’s marriage. In effect they are being made heirs to the Barlick empire. Christopher is master in Thornton and Earby. I don’t know how long the widow, Mary Thornber lived. All that is certain is that she survived her husband and I hope she had a quiet and easy old age' This Cockshott was trustee to the Bracewell Brothers who ran Old Coates Mill until 1860 when they went bankrupt. He must have had a connection with the family.
